Cover Letter for Freshers: What to Write When You Have Little Experience

By ZenXCV Editorial Team · Updated 6 November 2026

How to write a convincing first cover letter using projects, internships, coursework and part-time work, with a fresher example you can adapt.

As a fresher, you are not expected to have years of experience. Employers hiring graduates look for evidence that you can learn quickly, communicate clearly and apply what you studied. Your cover letter should point to that evidence.

What counts as evidence for a fresher

  • Academic or final-year projects, especially ones with a real user, dataset or client.
  • Internships and apprenticeships, even short ones.
  • Part-time jobs, which show reliability and customer contact.
  • Hackathons, competitions, college societies and volunteering.
  • Certifications that match the job, such as a cloud, accounting or design course.

A simple structure

Opening

State the role, your degree and when you graduate or graduated. Add one line on why this field interests you, tied to something concrete you did.

Your two strongest examples

Choose the two experiences closest to the job description. For each, explain the problem, what you did, and the result. Numbers help when they are honest: a project used by 120 students is stronger than "a successful project".

Why this company

Mention the graduate programme, the team or the product, and connect it to your interest or project work.

Close

Offer to share project links or a portfolio, and thank them.

Example for a fresher software role

  • "I'm applying for the Graduate Software Engineer role. I completed my B.Tech in Computer Science this year, and my final-year project, a timetable app built with React and Firebase, is now used by around 120 students in my department."
  • "During a two-month internship at a logistics start-up I wrote API tests in Python that caught three issues before release, and learned how a small team reviews and ships code."
  • "Your graduate programme's focus on mentoring and code review is exactly the environment where I want to start my career."

Mistakes freshers often make

  • Apologising for a lack of experience. Focus on what you have done.
  • Listing every subject studied. Pick the two or three that matter for this role.
  • Using a template letter with the company name swapped in.
  • Making the letter longer than a page.

Pair it with a strong fresher resume
